How to prepare for your boudoir photoshoot

What to bring, what to wear, and what really happens on the day, from champagne and make-up to seeing your images.

Boudoir portrait in soft studio light at Exclusive Photography

Booking a boudoir shoot is a big step, and most people feel a mix of excitement and nerves. That's completely normal. Here's how to prepare, and what to expect when you arrive, so you can relax and enjoy it.

Before the day

  • Think about why you're doing it. A gift for your partner, a milestone birthday, a new chapter, or simply for you. Telling your photographer the reason helps them shape the whole shoot around it.
  • Gather a few ideas. A handful of images you love (poses, lighting, moods) is plenty. Your photographer will suggest what suits you.
  • Plan your outfits. Bring two or three looks. Lingerie sets, a favourite bodysuit, an oversized shirt or knit, a partner's jacket, or a sheet and nothing else all work beautifully. Pieces that fit well photograph better than pieces that are new.
  • Go easy on tan lines and tight elastic. Wear loose clothing on the way in, so there are no marks from straps or waistbands.

On the day

  • Arrive with clean, dry hair and a bare face. Our professional hair and make-up artists take it from there.
  • Allow 3–4 hours. Hair and make-up, your photoshoot, then viewing your images.
  • Bring accessories. Heels, jewellery, a hat or a meaningful piece (an engagement ring, a watch, dog tags) can add a personal touch.

During the shoot

You'll start with a glass of champagne (or a coffee or tea) while you're pampered. Then your photographer talks through the look you'd love and guides every pose, from where to put your hands to how to angle your chin, so you never have to wonder what to do. Nearly everyone is nervous at first; most say the nerves disappear within minutes.

Seeing your images

Straight after your shoot you'll see all your images and choose your favourites with our viewing consultant. Prints, albums, wall art and digital images are available once you've seen your photos. Most people spend between $800 and $2,000 on their images, and some choose to pay over time. See pricing for more.
